InDesign Catalogue – “MODE Home”
As a class we are working with Indesign as a tool for layout. You have used Illustrator and Photoshop for it best toolsets. In combination these programs help you as a designer to use your time efficiently and add the ease of process for design projects. Take your time to read over the material provided before even considering the Design.
For this project you will design a furniture catalogue. We have looked at examples and you have been provided with assets for use.
Design Specifications:
Name:  “Mode Home”
Include:
  • Optional: Use Illustrator to create illustration element
  • Use Photoshop to edit photos (provided above), including making masks
  • Use InDesign to create a 4 page 8.5 x 11 (spread) document, plus 1 cover design for Print (300 ppi), making 5 pages in total.
  • .25 Margin (Quarter Inch)
  • .125 Bleed
  • Headline/ Title
  • Include Item descriptions (Filler Text)

Stylized Illustration

Assignment:

Make your own stylized Illustration on Photoshop from Graphics made in Illustrator using the pen tool.

Style the illustration in Photoshop to give it depth and texture

1) Create Illustration, place the main shapes into individual layers (Release to Sequence)

2) Name your Layers

3) Export as PSD File from Illustrator

5) Open on Photoshop

4) Use the Photoshop Tools, to add value and texture

Movie Poster

Assignment:

Using your latest knowledge of typography and design principles, create 1-2 at 11 x 17″ Movie Posters at 300 ppi. The purpose of this exercise is to sharpen your understanding of the balance between graphics and titles in a composition.

For this exercise, you’ll be using Adobe Photoshop (optional: Adobe Illustrator and InDesign for other elements) Set up your document in Photoshop. Utilize layers and your art boards to create 2 different versions of the same poster. This difference can be typographic, image difference in color and color modes, blend modes or others. The key is to experiment and create two strong options for a potential client.

Incorporate your knowledge of:

  1. Selections
  2. Masking
  3. Lighting filters
  4. Blur Filters
  5. Blend modes
  6. Smart Objects
  7. Adjustment layers
  8. Image modes
  9. Typography

Remember the basics:

  • Titles should not outshine the graphics
  • Don’t italicize all caps
  • Avoid cheesy stock Photoshop effects & filters on text
  • Never stretch text

  • Do your research to emulate the designs of actual Fashion Magazines in order to determine your placement of images and captions.
  • Use High Resolution photos only.
  • Look at all of the image examples below to get an idea of what’s expected.
  • Make sure you take a look at the Rubric to help guide you with the assignment as well.

Web Ads

Assignment:

Considering the Principles and Elements of design, create 5 Web Ads from the standard sizes given to you using Photoshop.
You’re encouraged to use the photos from the previous Product or Portrait Photoshoot to build a series of ads, but you also have creative reign to you choose another product or theme using royalty-free stock images. You’ll find project details such as the Ad Types you’ll create for this project and their dimensions below.

  1. Ad for Instagram Story – 1080px by 1920px
  2. Ad for Instagram Grid (Portrait size) – 1080px by 1350px
  3. Ad for General Website (Rectangle) – 300px x 250px
  4. Ad for General Website (Leaderboard) – 728px – 90px
  5. Animated Ad for Web (GIF) – Square, 5 Seconds, 250px by 250 px

Photo Collage

Assignment:

Create a collage of any 8-12 photos of your choice in Adobe Photoshop.
*Any of the 8-12 images can be used as an optional background.
Demonstrate skills acquired from the completed exercises with selection tools, layer masks, and blending. Have fun with this project, but remember that the goal is to execute a clean, memorable design as well.
Your collage can be symbolic or, it can just be purely an assortment of masked out images with clean edges. Either way, do your best work!
Steps
  1. Set up 11 x 17″ Document at 300 ppi (can be either landscape or portrait)
  2. Gather 8-12+ images
  3. Place images in Document
  4. Mask and Adjust images
