Assignment:

Considering the Principles and Elements of design create trifold Brochure for F.I.R.S.T Institute’s Graphic Design and Web Development Program using InDesign.

Before you begin:
Handcraft a Mockup Brochure by hand using paper. Fold one sheet of paper onto itself twice, and label your sides to visualize your format!

Getting Started:

  • Use Photoshop to edit photos (provided) as needed – You may use other Hi-Res photos as well
  • Optional: Use Illustrator to create a vector-based illustration element

Document Settings

  • 8.5 x 11 Landscape document for Print (300 ppi)
  • Two Pages (non-facing)
  • 3 columns (this allows for the brochure layout)
  • .25 Margin
  • .125 Bleed
  • .5 Gutter

Requirements:

In combination these programs help you as a designer to use your time efficiently and add the ease of process for design projects. Take your time to read over the material provided before even considering the Design.
For this project you will design a furniture catalogue. We have looked at examples and you have been provided with assets for use.

Stylized Illustration

Assignment:

Make your own stylized Illustration on Photoshop from Graphics made in Illustrator using the pen tool.

Style the illustration in Photoshop to give it depth and texture

1) Create Illustration, place the main shapes into individual layers (Release to Sequence)

2) Name your Layers

3) Export as PSD File from Illustrator

5) Open on Photoshop

4) Use the Photoshop Tools, to add value and texture

Movie Poster

Assignment:

Using your latest knowledge of typography and design principles, create 1-2 at 11 x 17″ Movie Posters at 300 ppi. The purpose of this exercise is to sharpen your understanding of the balance between graphics and titles in a composition.

For this exercise, you’ll be using Adobe Photoshop (optional: Adobe Illustrator and InDesign for other elements) Set up your document in Photoshop. Utilize layers and your art boards to create 2 different versions of the same poster. This difference can be typographic, image difference in color and color modes, blend modes or others. The key is to experiment and create two strong options for a potential client.

Incorporate your knowledge of:

  1. Selections
  2. Masking
  3. Lighting filters
  4. Blur Filters
  5. Blend modes
  6. Smart Objects
  7. Adjustment layers
  8. Image modes
  9. Typography

Remember the basics:

  • Titles should not outshine the graphics
  • Don’t italicize all caps
  • Avoid cheesy stock Photoshop effects & filters on text
  • Never stretch text

Cottage Magazine Pages 6 and 7

Assignment:

Create a 1-4 Page Fashion Magazine in InDesign using images and your typography skills.

  • Do your research to emulate the designs of actual Fashion Magazines in order to determine your placement of images and captions.
  • Use High Resolution photos only.
  • Look at all of the image examples below to get an idea of what’s expected.
  • Make sure you take a look at the Rubric to help guide you with the assignment as well.

Document Settings: 1-4 Pages, 300 ppi (Print Quality), 8.5 x 11″ (Portrait or Landscape)

Margins: 0.25″, Bleed: 0.125″
